Soil and Groundwater Investigation for Sustainable Agricultural Development: A Case Study from Brunei Darussalam

چکیده
Brunei has made significant progress in agricultural development over the past four decades. However, crop production, such as rice, is still insufficient to meet demands of growing population, mainly due scarcity water resources, acidic soils, and advancing environmental deterioration. This study conducted soil groundwater investigations at three selected rice cultivation sites Darussalam. The geoelectrical resistivity method using vertical electrical sounding (VES) technique delineated subsurface stratigraphy with resistivities ranging from 1 180 ?m investigated area. A potential aquifer zone was inferred one surveyed areas 10 150 depths about 40 60 m below ground level. Groundwater levels were also shallower irrigated compared non-irrigated sites. physicochemical properties revealed high alkalinity mineralisation, evident magnesium, bicarbonate, ammoniacal nitrogen, iron, well pH values samples, believed be effects leaching salt ions into shallow through infiltration recharge. In addition, showed that soils near a pumping more acidic, had lower moisture, total nutrients, likely pumping. Our results demonstrate future irrigation activities need consider local characteristics, flow paths, nutrient transport ensure sustainable areas.

متن کاملTuberculosis peritonitis in Negara Brunei Darussalam.
INTRODUCTION Tuberculosis peritonitis (TBP) is uncommon and symptoms can be non-specific. Local data are lacking and our aim is to review our local experience with TBP. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between the period of 1996 to 2004, there were 10 [male: 6; mean age, 48 +/- 18.5 years (range, 26 to 73)] cases of histologically documented TBP. Comparisons were made with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) p...

One thousand consecutive Brunei Darussalam patients referred with low Hb, and/or low MCV and MCH (Hb < 12.5g/dl, MCV < 76fl, MCH < 27pg) were studied in the laboratory for underlying haemoglobinopathies. 30.0% of such patients were proved to have either beta-thalassaemia trait, beta-thalassaemia major, Hb AE, Hb EE, Hb E beta-thalassaemia or Hb H disease. In some, the haemoglobin abnormality wa...
متن کاملTeacher Professional Development–Current Practices in a Secondary School in Brunei Darussalam
This research paper presents the current practices of teacher professional development, perceived as beneficial by teachers themselves, in a private secondary school in Brunei Darussalam. This is part of the findings of a larger qualitative study on teacher empowerment, using ethnographic methods for data collection, i.e. participant observation, interviews and document analysis. The field work...
